2009 09 18 Three more matches Print E-mail
Written by Andrew Stevenson

Michael Burke gave me a folder with some whale flukes taken sometime in the early 1990s. I sent the two best fluke shots to Allied Whale and Dr Peter Stevick came back with the matches within a day. I thought the two photos from Michael were probably taken in 1993 given the notations but wasn't a hundred per cent sure. Peter Stevick made the matches to whales taken in 1994 by him and Dr Greg Stone, both on behalf of College of the Atlantic. It would be too much of a coincidence that the two whales were both together again a year later so we are going to have to date Michael's photos as 1994, matched the same year it seems, by Peter and Greg!

And the matching photos, taken the same year apparently by Stevick/Stone

The same day Gale McCullough, who conducts seal studies across the bay from College of the Atlantic and has worked on various projects with Allied Whale on and off for many years often helps out with the photo-id work when extra hands are needed. In recent years she has been very active in organizing the fluke photograph group on Flickr. She made a match to our whale 0018 taken on 28th of April 2007 to HWC#5673. There is only a single previous sighting of that animal - it is from February of 1989 in Samana Bay. Good work Gale and many thanks.
