07_marshroom_panels_medium 08_school_group_mediumThe Animals without Passports exhibit just opened at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster, MA. The exhibit follows the humpback whale's migration route between the North Atlantic feeding grounds and the Caribbean breeding grounds and features information on the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary's sister sanctuaries program. It also highlights the various hazards humpback face as they make this journey across ocean borders such as entanglement, harassment, and ship collisions.

The Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary's (SBNMS) mission is to protect humpback whales while feeding and nursing within sanctuary waters. To help protect them when they leave the sanctuary, SBNMS has established a sister sanctuary program as part of an international global vision of Marine Mammal Protected Areas worldwide.

For the first time, international marine sanctuaries are joining together to protect a migratory marine mammal species on both ends of its range - the endangered humpback whale. The goal of the sister sanctuary program is to build a model for international cooperation to protect the endangered humpback whale along its migratory pathway in the North Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea.

The exhibit was funded by the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, and the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation and will up through December 2012.
