September 8th Whale sightings by Nick Hutchings Print E-mail

Nick reports seeing what must have been four Cuvier Beaked whales in the gap between the platform at Sally Tuckers at Challenger. This has been the same area we have had past Cuvier Beaked whale sightings but on this occasion there were four whales rather than a single whale. Nick described them as "looking like enormous bottlenose dolphins". At the same time he had a scattering layer showing at 300 fathoms (200+ feet) indicating a dense layer of schools of fish which could well have been what the beaked whales were feeding on.

Getting reports like this from people who are out on their boats provides invaluble information, so thanks Nick for letting us know!
