2011 02 26 And more fluke IDs from the Silver Bank, Dominican Republic Print
Written by Andrew Stevenson

While we continue to have foul weather here in Bermuda I continue to sort through my photographs taken on the Silver Bank almost a month ago. Here are three more fluke IDs. The first one underneath seems to bear fresh scars, probably from fighting other male humpbacks for the attention of a female. Many of these whales have bloody tips to their flukes or dorsal fins or even on the tubercles on their heads from this competitive and aggresive display of force amongst the males as they try and assume the dominant position of the primary escort to a female.
