Conferences
WhalesBermuda has participated in a number of conferences including four Society for Marine Mammology Conferences in: Quebec City; Halifax; Barcelona and Palm Beach. Andrew gave a presentation at the 2024 SMM conference in Perth Australia on humpbacks ingesting water to inflate their throat pleats and rubbing the exposed creases in sand holes to get rid of sea lice. His abstract on pockmark scars on females has been accepted to the upcoming SMM conference in Puerto Rico in October 2026.
Andrew has also presented at the European Cetacean Society conferences with two video presentations in 2025 in the Azores and a poster presentation and a film presentation in Dundee, Scotland in 2026.
Another Humpback Whale World Congress, this time in October 2025 in Tadoussac Quebec, was another occasion to give a video presentation on pockmark scarring on North Atlantic female humpbacks. A three-minute sizzle reel for Andrew’s upcoming documentary, “If They Were Us: The Humpback Whales of the Sargasso Sea” was also screened in a local pub one evening.
Andrew contributed to the General Assembly of the iAtlantic, a multidisciplinary research program seeking to assess the health of deep-sea and open-ocean ecosystems across the full span of the Atlantic Ocean in Edinburgh in 2019 and Floreanapolis, Brazil in 2022 and in Edinburgh in October 2024
Andrew participated 12-18 May 2024 in Mexico at the IUCN workshop to put forward the case for Bermuda to be designated an Important Marine Mammal Area.
Andrew presented at the Global Ocean Biodiversity Initiative in Vancouver 1-2 February, 2023 and at the Humpback Whale World Congress in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic 5-11 March, 2023. 140 participants from around the world participated in the Congress. My film, “Secret Lives of the Humpbacks” screened one evening at the cultural center.
